FAQ
Questions families ask us
If your question is not here, call us. We would rather answer it properly than have you guess.
Getting started
How quickly can care start?
Often within 24 to 48 hours, and sometimes the same day for a hospital discharge. If a surgery or discharge is scheduled, call us before it happens — arranging care in advance is far easier than arranging it on the day.
What happens on the first call?
We ask what is going on and listen. There is no script and no pressure. If we are not the right fit, we will tell you that and try to point you somewhere better.
Is there a cost to the first conversation?
No. The initial conversation and the in-home assessment are free and carry no obligation.
Is there a contract or a minimum number of hours?
No long-term contract. Plenty of clients start with a couple of hours a week, and care can change or stop as needs change.
Caregivers
How do you choose which caregiver comes to my home?
We match on the practical requirements first — schedule, level of care, whether there is mobility or memory involvement — and then on personality and preference. You can request a caregiver of a particular gender, which matters to many people for personal care.
Will it be the same person each time?
That is the goal, and we work hard at it. Consistency is most of what makes home care work, particularly for dementia clients. Where a schedule needs more than one caregiver, we keep the team small and introduce anyone new properly.
What if the caregiver is not a good fit?
Tell us and we will change it. No awkwardness required. A poor match is our problem to solve, not something you should tolerate.
Are caregivers screened and insured?
Yes. Every caregiver is background-checked as Illinois requires for home services agency employees, and they are our W-2 employees — insured, with payroll taxes and workers compensation handled by us. Our policy also carries theft of client property coverage, so if something goes missing from the home, resolving it is our responsibility rather than yours.
What protection is there if something goes seriously wrong?
Beyond background checks and supervision, our professional liability policy includes abuse and molestation coverage as well as theft of client property. It is not a comfortable thing to advertise, and plenty of smaller agencies do not carry it. We would rather you know it is there and never need it. If you ever have a concern about a caregiver, call us directly — that call goes to an owner.
What happens if our caregiver is sick?
We send a replacement. That is one of the main practical differences between an agency and hiring privately, where a caregiver calling in sick becomes your emergency.
Services and scope
Do you provide medical or nursing care?
No. We are licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health as a Home Services Agency, which covers non-medical care — personal care, homemaker and companion services. Skilled nursing, wound care and therapy require a home health agency, and we are glad to help you find one.
Can caregivers give medication?
Caregivers provide medication reminders — prompting at the right time and confirming it was taken. They do not administer medication, which requires a licensed clinician.
Can you provide 24-hour or live-in care?
Yes. Round-the-clock care is arranged as shifts so that someone is always awake and alert. We will talk through whether 24-hour care, overnight support, or a smaller schedule actually fits the situation.
Can you drive my mother to appointments?
Yes. Transportation is one of the most requested parts of our service, and for many clients it is the thing that makes staying at home possible.
Cost and payment
How much does home care cost?
It depends on the hours and level of care, so we quote after understanding the situation rather than publishing a rate that would not apply to you. We are straightforward about pricing and there are no hidden fees.
Does Medicare pay for this?
Generally no. Medicare covers skilled home health care ordered by a physician, not non-medical home care. Most of our clients pay privately, and some use long-term care insurance or VA benefits.
Can long-term care insurance cover it?
Frequently, yes. Policies vary, and we can help you understand what your policy asks for and provide the documentation your insurer needs.
Are there VA benefits that help?
Possibly. Aid and Attendance and Veteran-Directed Care can both help with the cost for eligible veterans and surviving spouses. We cannot determine eligibility or file claims, but we can tell you what to ask and point you to a Veterans Service Organization that helps at no charge.
Text messages and privacy
Will you text me?
Only if you have opted in. Text messaging is entirely optional — you can decline and still become a client, and we will call or email instead. Reply STOP to any message to stop receiving them.
Do you sell or share my information?
No. We do not sell your information, and mobile information and text messaging consent are never shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing purposes. Our Privacy Policy sets this out in full.
Not sure what you need yet?
Most people call us before they have it figured out. Tell us what is going on and we will help you work out what would actually help — no pressure, no obligation.
